If the person experiences an it hy skin rash, mouth lesions, or lesions in the genitals, then one should consult a dermatologist as soon as possible. By simply looking at the rash, the dermatologist cannot tell that it is lichen planus. To confirm this condition, further diagnostic tests may have to be run. These include a skin biopsy test where in a small patch of skin is visualized under a microscope to check for the pattern of skin cells which is characteristic of lichen planus.
