Nail Avulsion Treatment in Delhi

Nail Avulsion treatment can be really helpful in treating these concerns!

The nail is the important part of the fingers and toes that covers the digits. It is supported and adhered to the nail bed. Nail removal or avulsion is a surgery performed to eliminate the damaged nail by removing the hardest part of the nail unit called the nail plate. Avulsion may happen on the finger or toenail, and the common cause of avulsion is an ingrown nail, injury, or infection says dr. Nivedita Dadu, the best dermatologist in Delhi

Dadu Medical Centre provides the best nail avulsion treatment in Delhi and treats all types of ingrown nails and other nail problems. A dermatologist performs the surgery using the best techniques to reduce patient discomfort and give optimum results.

Why is nail avulsion surgery carried out?
Nail avulsion is carried out for the following reasons:

  • An accidental injury or trauma caused to the nail.
  • Onychocryptosis (Ingrown toenail).
  • Onychogryphosis (thickened nail) is caused due to aging, congenital disorders, or psoriasis.
  • Pincer nails- Toenail disorder wherein the nail bed and the skin underneath it are compressed as the nail edges grow gradually inwards.
  • Periungual warts due to infection by Human Papilloma Virus. This is an outcome of nail-biting leading to trauma and maceration of the nail.
  • Diagnosis for abnormalities and severity of any disease by biopsy of the nail matrix and nail bed.
  • Nail infected by a fungus (Onychomycosis) (may require medical management before or along with surgery).

How is nail avulsion surgery performed?
The nail avulsion surgery takes place by numbing the patient’s affected digits with local anesthesia. The site of treatment is thoroughly cleaned with alcohol or surgical soap, and the nails are clipped short. There are two types of nail Avulsion: Partial and Total. In partial Nail Avulsion only a strip of nail from the sides is clipped whereas in Total Nail Avulsion Entire Nail plate is removed.

Depending upon the severity of the nail damage, complete or partial nail removal may be suggested by the dermatologist.

The surgical method of nail removal makes use of a nail elevator device. The nail elevator instrument is placed underneath the free edge (distal) of the nail plate such that it can be removed from the nail bed. A force is applied proximally in the direction of the nail matrix to separate the nail plate. With repeated side to side or longitudinal strokes, the nail plate gets detached.

After the treatment, the wound should heal within a few weeks as per the best dermatosurgeons in Delhi.

Fingernails can take 5-6 months to grow back, and toenails can take 10 to 15 months to grow back, says Dr. Nivedita Dadu.

What to expect after surgery?

  • Follow the doctor's instructions to take care of the wound.
  • After 1-2 days, wash the wound area with clean soap and water two times a day and put a new clean bandage (do not use an adhesive bandage).
  • If a Matrixectomy is performed, the nail does not grow back. It is the procedure of destruction of nails using chemicals like phenol.
  • Change the bandage when it gets wet or dirty.
  • Do not wear tight shoes that do not fit well.
  • Wear cotton socks.
