Scarring Alopecia Treatment In Delhi

Baldness makes people feel distressed. It results in a lack of self-confidence because it contributes to a displeasing appearance.

Scarring alopecia is a permanent type of baldness wherein the hair follicles get destroyed. It includes the scarring or destruction of skin tissues lying in or around the hair and is restored by fibrous tissue. As hair follicles are permanently damaged, hair regrowth is not possible. Dr. Nivedita Dadu, trichologist in Delhi, NCR provides the best methods and treatment that help manage scarring alopecia.

Symptoms of Scarring Alopecia

Initially, scarring alopecia begins as a non-scarring type and it may progress into permanent bald patches. It starts with one or more discrete bald patches of small size which can later coalesce to produce large bald patches that eventually result in total hair loss. The bald patches appear shiny and smooth as all the hair follicle openings are absent.

Typically, Scarring Alopecia can result from the following symptoms

  • Itchy scalp.
  • Pain.
  • Oozing of pus or purulent discharge from the scalp.
  • Blister formation.
  • Burning of scalp.
  • Crusting.
  • Atrophic/ depressed patches on scalp.

Types of Scarring Alopecia

Scarring alopecia can be classified into three types

  • Primary scarring alopecia: It is a condition wherein stem cells inside the hair roots are destroyed irreversibly and the scarred tissues are replaced by fibrous tissue. The hair follicles are affected mainly by neutrophils, lymphocytes, or both of them which are inflammatory cells..
  • Secondary scarring alopecia: It is an irreversible type of baldness caused by the destruction of hair follicles by infection, autoimmune conditions, trauma, cancer, radiation therapy, or burns.
  • Hereditary/ Developmental scarring alopecia: This type is caused due to family history of having genetic factors for hair loss, natural aging, or hormonal imbalance.

Causes of Scarring Alopecia

The exact underlying reason for Scarring alopecia remains unknown. It has been found that inflammation and destruction of stem cells of hair follicles (in the outer sheath of hair roots) contribute to scarring alopecia. Other factors include infections, hereditary, burns, trauma, injury, tumors.

How can Scarring alopecia be diagnosed?

Scarring alopecia can be diagnosed by conducting a thorough examination of the scalp and hair. Firstly, the patient's medical history is reviewed, a track of age and the time of onset of scarring alopecia is taken, and the possibility of having any skin concern or other scalp conditions are checked. At Dadu Medical Centre, a leading hair fall treatment clinic in Delhi, a biopsy test of the scalp or hair pull test is also performed to confirm the presence of this disease.

What are the treatment options available for Scarring alopecia?

Scarring alopecia cannot be cured as hair cannot regrow, but the treatment involved can help to prevent further baldness by minimizing inflammation or cover the bald patches by hair transplant (only successful, if there are enough healthy hair donor sites). Treatments for scarring alopecia in Delhi at Dadu Medical Centre are:

1. For lymphocytic alopecia

It can be treated by applying topical corticosteroid creams or broad-spectrum sunscreen; use of corticosteroid injections in the inflammatory lesions of the scalp; and by intake of oral medications such as corticosteroids, antimalarial drugs, recommended by a hair doctor.

2. For neutrophilic alopecia

This can be treated by using antiseptic shampoos; applying or topical creams/ spray/ solution, and by oral therapies like intake of oral antibiotics, recommended by a hair doctor.

3. Surgical approach

People who have scarring alopecia with lesions only after an appropriate assessment and diagnosis can be given an option for surgical reduction of scalp or hair transplant on the basis of prognosis. For best results, hair transplantation in Delhi is also carried out complementary to the surgery at Dadu Medical Centre.
